The online multiplayer mode for Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption II (2018) is now live. This companion experience for Rockstar’s hit Western video game launched in a beta (test) form at 8:30 am EST today (November 27th). The single-player mode of Red Dead Redemption II was released on October 26th, and opens in the year 1899 with players taking on the role of acting outlaw Arthur Morgan, a member of the Dutch van der Linde gang.
Red Dead Online is being rolled out in stages this week. The first access (today) is for owners of the “Ultimate Edition” of Red Dead Redemption II. Tomorrow, on November 28th, those who played the game on its first day of its release (Oct. 26th) can participate. Next, on Thursday, Nov.29th, those who played the game within its first three days of release (Oct.26th-29th) can access. Finally, this Friday, Nov.30th, Red Dead Online will be open to all players.
Rockstar Games has announced that players will be able to create and customize their online multiplayer characters. Gamers in Red Dead Online will be able to either explore the multiplayer world individually or in group “posses”. From information released thus far, players will be able to hunt, fish, battle other gangs, and take on others in “spontaneous skirmishes and pitched set-piece battles”.
The purpose of the beta mode is to allow Rockstar’s developers to make technical adjustments as needed, which includes input from those playing the multiplayer mode. According to Rockstar, Red Dead Online will be updated throughout its life-cycle. Red Dead Redemption II is currently available for the Xbox One and Sony PlayStation4 consoles.
