This November 23rd, one day after the US Thanksgiving, there is an alternative to the shopping madness of Black Friday. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is offering “Fresh Air Friday”, when admission to all 41 state parks is free.
The day is a partnership between CPW and Great Outdoors Colorado, which uses a portion of Colorado lottery proceeds to support state parks. For navigation on Fresh Air Friday, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has the Colorado Trail Explorer, or “COTREX”, app. Over 230 trail managers have contributed to the free app, creating them most detailed trail map in the Mile High State.
The COTREX app allows users to search trails and routes for specific activities and trail maps can be filtered to match a given activity. Users can record trips and field notes, earn badges by completing challenges, share, and importantly in non-signal areas, maps can be downloaded to use offline. Here is a CPW promo video for “Fresh Air Friday”:
A listing for specific park events can be found at the official FRESH AIR FRIDAY site. Such events include organized hikes, scavenger hunts, refreshments at visitor centers.
