Are you a college student that would like to study Quentin Tarantino’s Westerns or discuss the upcoming video game, Red Dead Redemption II (2018)? There are college credit courses where you can! Now open for the Fall 2018 term, two separate online classes offered by Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario/Michigan explore the Western genre, from film to TV to video games.

Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre is a film-focused course in which students complete two Film Reviews from a selection including such Westerns as Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (2015), and Taylor Sheridan’s Hell or High Water (2016). Within weekly lectures, renowned Western actors & directors are discussed.

The Video Game West is a class that explores the Western genre via the medium of video games. Topics such as the History of Western Video Games, Locations & Settings, Historical Figures, Multiplayer Experience, and Marketing are examined. Assignments include weekly participation questions and a project to create a plan for a Western video game! With the highly-anticipated launch of Red Dead Redemption II on October 26th, The Video Game West is a primer for those looking to understand that game in context. Here is one trailer for that game:

Each of the online courses is offered by the Continuing Education of Sault College and runs 14 weeks from to September 11 to December 18. The classes are open to Canadian, US, and international students and official course descriptions & fees can be found at WESTERNS: A STUDY IN FILM THE VIDEO GAME WEST. Additional Ontario-based colleges offering the two courses can be found via the OntarioLearn website – use the name of each within the search function of the Courses option to see a listing.

For registration, visit the link HOW TO REGISTER. Course approval from your home college can be obtained by contacting the Continuing Education department – they will provide a course outline for your institution to authorize for your specific program. Students can register until September 21.
