Railway Empire (2018), the railroad simulation game from Kalypso Media, has expanded north of the US border. Railway Empire: The Great Lakes is a new DLC (downloadable content) that lets would-be tycoons take on the ruggedness of Canada in the years 1860 to 1880. Railway Empire launched on January 26th, and is available for Xbox One, Sony PlayStation4 and Windows PC platforms. The game covers 100 years of railroad development, beginning in 1830.
The Great Lakes DLC offers the “Dominion Day” scenario, in which players help create economic independence by connecting what were initially British colonies (Canada become an independent Dominion in 1867), while developing the resources of the vast Canadian forests.
Having grown up in Northern Ontario with the winters of the Canadian Shield, this writer appreciates the DLC’s new “enhanced weather system” for the game’s northern regions. Additionally, there are two new locomotives, nineteen new cities, and new tradeable goods (such as fur and winter clothing). The new map can also be traveled in “night mode”.
Railway Empire: The Great Lakes now gives a truly North American scope to the game, with previous new content taking players into Mexico – see the Railswestern post MEXICO DLC for info on that release.
