One week remains in Amtrak’s annual “Winter Warm-Up Sale” for Midwest travel. Covering travel between January 1st and March 31st on select passenger trains, the sale offers 20% off fares in four states – Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.
Within the four states, the following trains can be travelled at a discount: in Michigan, the Wolverine (Pontiac-Detroit-Chicago), Blue Water (Port Huron-Chicago) & Pere Marquette (Grand Rapids-Chicago); in Illinois, the Illini/Saluki (Chicago-Carbondale), Illinois Zephyr/Carl Sandburg (Chicago-Quincy), Lincoln Service (Chicago-St. Louis); in Indiana, the Hoosier State (Indianapolis-Chicago); in Missouri, the Missouri River Runner (Kansas City-St. Louis).
Additionally, new diesel-electric locomotives are being rolled out on Midwest routes. Featuring the new Amtrak Midwest logo, the new “Midwest Charger” engines are produced by Siemens and can reach top speeds of 125 miles per hour. In comparison to the previous Amtrak locomotives, the new engines offer a 90% reduction in emissions & a 16% reduction in fuel consumption.
Coupled with track and station improvements, the Midwest Chargers will drop the Amtrak travel time between Chicago and St. Louis from 5-and-a-half to 4-and-a-half hours.
Discounted fares in the “Winter Warm-Up Sale” must be booked by next Friday, March 30th. See the official Amtrak link WINTER WARM-UP for train schedules.
