Spring 2017 registration is now opening for three online community college courses designed and taught by this writer; Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre, The Video Game West, and Westerns: Film as a Lens to the Present. The first two are offered via Sault College (Sault Ste. Marie, ON/MI) and the third thru St. Clair College (Windsor-Detroit region).
Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre is a film-focused analysis of Westerns now in its eighth year. Students complete two Film Reviews from a selection of movies that include such recent Westerns as The Revenant (2015) and The Hateful Eight (2015) – new films are continually added. The Video Game West, launched in 2015, guides students thru an interactive exploration of Western video games. Assignments include weekly participation questions and a project in which students create their own story-line for a Western game. Each online class is open to CDN, US and international students outside those two countries.
To register with Sault College and/or receive course approval from your home college, contact Sault College – Continuing Education – the college will provide a course outline for your institution to authorize for your program. Neither course requires a textbook – lecture content and readings are provided online. Registration is now open until May 16th, with a May 9th course start date.
The Continuing Education department of St. Clair College will offer Westerns: Film as Lens to the Present as a General Education elective course at two different times this Spring. The first 12-week offering runs May 8th to July 28th, with the condensed 6-week section running July 3rd to August 18th. Registration information can be found here, with the course description available at General Education Listings General Education Listings.
Westerns: Film as Lens to the Present , offered since 2012, explores a number of themes such as Origins of the Western, Landscape & Setting, Indigenous Peoples, Women, and Soundtracks. The course also examines such current Westerns as AMC’s Hell on Wheels, A&E’s Longmire and Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption.
