This post is to announce that 2016 Winter Term registration is now open for the two online Sault College courses taught by this writer; The Video Game West, and Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre. Launched in 2015, The Video Game West guides students thru an interactive exploration of the Western genre via the medium of video games. Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre is entering its seventh year and is a film-focused analysis of the genre.
Each online course runs 14 weeks and is offered internationally to all college-level students, regardless of location. To register and/or receive approval for the course from your home college, contact the Continuing Education Continuing Education department at Sault College – the college will provide a course outline for your institution to authorize as part of your specific program.
The Video Game West examines such topics as the history of Western video games, locations & settings, historical Western figures in games, the multiplayer experience, and the marketing of Western games. Assignments include weekly participation questions and a project in which students create their own story-line for a Western game! Games that will be discussed include the acclaimed Red Dead Redemption (2010), produced by Rockstar Games. Here is one trailer for the award-winning game:
Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre allows students to complete two Film Reviews from a selection of movies that range from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) to Django Unchained (2012) – new film choices are added each year!
Each online course begins Tuesday, January 12th and students can register until January 19th. The cost for each class is $384.62 (CDN), which at the current US exchange rate is approximately $275 (US). Neither course requires a textbook – lecture content and readings are provided online. Please feel free to contact me directly with any questions via email @ firstname.lastname@example.org .
If you are looking for a different kind of flexible college class, one that matches an interest in the Western genre, films and/or video games, I hope to see you on the electronic trail!
