Casey Affleck is set to direct Joaquin Phoenix in an upcoming Western film. Phoenix will star in a cinematic adaptation of the 2009 novel, Far Bright Star, written by Robert Olmstead. The story is set in 1916, with lead character Napoleon Childs guiding a mercenary group on a hunt for Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa (the general did actually raid the town of Columbus, New Mexico, in 1916).  The horse-mounted group led by Childs will struggle to catch Villa and then face a devastating attack by bandits.  Phoenix will play the character Childs.

As many may know, this won’t be the first time Affleck and Phoenix have worked together – Affleck directed Phoenix in the 2010 faux documentary I’m Still Here. Affleck’s Western credentials are strong, having given an Oscar-nominated performance as Robert Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). Speaking recently to The Hollywood Reporter, Affleck described Far Bright Star as “….a beautifully-written story on pain and loss and the drive and resilience one finds within themselves to continue through the day.”
