Written by Jim Loomis, who has ridden every Amtrak route and taken VIA Rail across Canada five times, the guide is broad enough for both first-time passengers and those with miles of track under their belt. Updated with new photographs and information, chapter titles include “Planning Your Own Train Trip”, “Life Onboard”, and “Suggested Itineraries”; additionally, a new chapter about major railway stations is provided. The book also shares the fundamentals of railroad operations.

This writer has read the 3rd Edition, published in 2011, and found the section about the history of passenger rail in North America, leading up to the launch of Amtrak (in 1971) and VIA Rail (in 1977) and developments since, to be well-written and accessible. In addition to insights about booking and finding the lowest fares, a number of tips are quite practical – e.g. never step on a rail if you have to cross a track because they can be very slippery!

Available in both hard-copy and e-versions, further information can be found via Chicago Review Press at All Aboard!
