The popular Mountain Men series has returned for a third season on the History Channel. Debuting in 2012, the show is an exploration of those who live a mountain man lifestyle in the 21st century. The original mountain men of the North American West were 19th century non-Indigenous fur trappers and explorers based in the Rocky Mountains. There were approximately 3,000 such men in that region between 1820 and the peak year of their era in 1840. After the fur trade declined, many would go on to work as scouts, hunters and guides for settlers travelling westward by wagon.
In our current world, when many rely on GPS to navigate and walk city streets peering down into smart phones for continued stimulation, there is something admirable about those able to read the signs of nature and move with its slower cycles. In the first two seasons of Mountain Men, viewers followed men living that lifestyle across the diverse locations of Montana, Alaska, the Blue Ridge Mountains in the eastern US, northern Maine, Idaho, and Arizona.
Season 3 of Mountain Men premiered on June 1st, 2014 and a new episode, entitled, “Where’s There’s Smoke, There’s Fire”, debuts this Sunday, June 22nd at 9pm (EST). Here is an intro clip for the series:
