While there has yet to be an official announcement from AMC or Entertainment One, the respective network and studio, early information about the Season Three DVD for Hell on Wheels has emerged. Some online retailers – including Amazon – are now accepting pre-orders for a July 15th DVD and Blu-ray release of the third season.
Launched in 2011, the acclaimed Western TV series dramatizes the building of the transcontinental Union Pacific railroad westward in the post-US Civil War years. Themes that have been explored in the first three seasons of the show include expansion of the US nation-state, Indigenous territorial rights, race relations, social class, and within the third season specifically, the notion of personal ambition.
A strong ensemble cast is led by Anson Mount. Mount plays Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier who had first joined the railway project to seek revenge upon a Union gang that had murdered his family during the war. Colm Meaney plays the real historical figure of Thomas Durant, a key financier and railroad tycoon of the Union Pacific. Hip-hop artist and poet Common plays the former slave, Elam Ferguson, who has a common-law wife, Eva, played by Robin McLeavy.
Hell on Wheels is currently shooting its fourth season in Alberta with an expected premiere of Season 4 in August.
