Amtrak is set to mark its 7th annual National Train Day with events across the United States on Saturday, May 10th. National Train Day is designed to bring train enthusiasts together and highlight the importance of train travel to communities.

Amtrak operates a number of Western US passenger routes with a variety of colorful names. The California Zephyr (which this writer has taken a number of times) runs from Chicago westward thru Colorado to San Francisco. The Texas Eagle will take you south from Chicago to Dallas and the Coast Starlight runs along the Pacific coast between Portland and Oregon. Doesn’t that sound much more romantic than a flight number? 😉

Events on National Train Day will take place at both Amtrak stations and community locations. Attractions include special excursion trains, interactive exhibits, children’s activities and model train displays. Amtrak will also be offering special National Train Day fares. In Denver, Colorado, an event will be held at the recently re-furbished downtown Union Station – members of the Colorado Rail Passenger Association (ColoRail) group will greet passengers as they arrive at the Amtrak station on Saturday.

Amtrak was launched as a national train service in 1971 and in 2013 recorded a record year for passenger travel (almost 32 million). A wide number of their trains now include free WiFi service and many argue for the more environmentally-friendly footprint of train travel  – current figures show train travel to be 20-30% more energy-efficient than plane or auto travel per-passenger-mile. 1. Thanks for the visit and comment, Here’s to a great day for rail fans, whether long-standing or now hearing the call, “All Aboard!” 😉

  1. I travelled all over America on Amtrak. Even slept on the floor in the canteen car – it wasn’t comfortable! Views from the train were great. Definitely a great way to see the country.

    1. Thanks for the visit and the comment. I haven’t tried the canteen car yet, ha, but have actually had some good sleeps in coach – the seats go back and have way more room than a bus or plane. The glass observation car is always a great place to relax and chat while you ride along. 🙂
      All the best,
