As shared in the Welcome / Courses and About sections of this site, I teach a Western genre course at the college level for both St. Clair College (Detroit (MI) – Windsor (ON) region) and Sault College (Sault Ste. Marie MI/ON). This post provides an update and options for students seeking a college-level credit in the study of the genre. There will be three online options to do so in the upcoming Winter 2014 term.

St. Clair College offers Westerns: Film as a Lens to the Present as a general elective course within its School of Community Studies. While the course is typically available to registered St. Clair students both on-campus and online, the class will only be offered online this coming Winter (January – April) term. There will be two sections of the course available. Please click on this St. Clair link for further information:

St. Clair College – The School of Community Studies – Winter 2014 Term – January 6 to April 25 – Contact your Program Co-ordinator at St. Clair College.

A third option to study the Western genre online is via the Continuing & Distance Education department of Sault College. A number of international students have successful completed the course, which is entitled Westerns: A Study in the Film Genre. Click Sault – Westerns for a course description and please visit this link for further info about registration:

Sault College – Continuing & Distance Education – Winter 2014 Term – January 14 to April 22 – Sault College

Within the Western courses offered by each college, students are given opportunities to complete film reviews and share reflections about the Western genre via assignments.

The classes explore such themes as Origins of the Western, Landscape & Setting, the portrayals of Indigenous Peoples, the portrayals of Women, Directors & Actors, Soundtracks, TV Westerns, and the Video Game West. The courses examine such current Western series as AMC’s Hell on Wheels and A&E’s Longmire as well as popular Western video games such as Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption (2010) and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (2013).

  1. Thanks for the visit and comment, Rick. For myself, I have some particular aspects for focus that remain broad enough for a range of approaches/ideas/materials within. The courses keep evolving given what I find works and my own research interests. All the best with yours!
