Based in Ucross, Wyoming, Johnson, a former law enforcement officer, is also a creative consultant for the critically-acclaimed A&E TV adaptation of the novels. The lead character of the books, Sheriff Walt Longmire of the fictional Wyoming county of Absaroka, is played by Robert Taylor in the TV series. Johnson’s good friend, Marcus Red Thunder, has also served as an advisor for the series and inspired the Cheyenne character of Henry Standing Bear, played by Lou Diamond Phillips.

Westernsreboot.com has a number of articles examining the show’s strengths as a Contemporary Western – here are two: Longmire Riding Strong & Cattle Rustling in 21st Century.
