As indicated in the Welcome / Courses and the About sections of this site, I teach a Western genre course at the college level. This post provides an update and options for those students interested in attaining a college-level credit in the study of the genre. Students, be they on-site, online, international and/or adult, will have 5 opportunities do so this coming Fall term (2013). The options include that of on-campus study or online/distance learning.
St. Clair College (located in the Detroit-Windsor region) offers Westerns: Film as Lens to the Present as a general elective course within its School of Community Studies. The course is available to registered St. Clair students both on-campus and online.
The class explores a number of themes within the Western genre – such themes include Origins of the Western, Components of the Western, Landscape & Setting, Indigenous Peoples, Women, Directors & Actors, Soundtracks, TV Westerns, Graphic Novels and the Video Game West. The course examines such current Western series as AMC’s Hell on Wheels and A&E’s Longmire as well as popular Western video games such as Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption (2010) and the Ubisoft-Techland collaboration Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (2013).

There will be four St. Clair College offerings for the Fall 2013 term. Two sections will be offered on-campus – one at the main (south) campus and the other at the downtown St. Clair campus. Two sections will also be offered online. Both the on-campus and online St. Clair offerings run for a total of 15 weeks beginning September 3rd.
