AMC has now released a video primer for its upcoming Season 3 of Hell on Wheels. The acclaimed Western series is set in the post-US Civil War era with its central framework the construction of the westward Union Pacific transcontinental railroad.

The show features a strong ensemble cast led by Anson Mount, Common and Colm Meaney. Mount plays the lead character of Cullen Bohannon, a former Confederate soldier who initially joined the railway project in Season 1 so as to track a Union gang that had murdered his family and hired help during the Civil War. Common plays Elam Ferguson, a former slave now working for the railway, and Meaney plays Thomas Durant, a real-life historical figure who was a financial director for the Union Pacific.

Season 3 of Hell on Wheels will be set in the year 1867 and questions remain prior to the season debut as to whether certain characters will return. One new female character will be joining the show – Jennifer Ferrin will play strong-willed female journalist, Louise Ellison, who travels to report on the Union Pacific construction.

One of the central conflicts at the conclusion of Season 2 was the encroachment of the railroad into land that the Sioux people deemed sacred. In addition to the issue of Indigenous territorial rights, the series takes a multifaceted look at the process of the American nation-state expansion, race relations, the growth of industrial technology and social class.

ADVISORY: The following Season 3 “primer” clip contains spoilers for those who have not yet viewed up to the completion of Season 2. Please note that the video also contains mature themes and some graphic images.

Season 3 of Hell on Wheels will debut on AMC with a two-hour premiere on Saturday, August 10th at 9 EST/8 CST.
