AMC has now released a promotional poster for the upcoming third season of its acclaimed Western series, Hell on Wheels. The series is centered around the westward construction of the Union Pacific transcontinental railroad in the post-US Civil War era. Featuring a strong ensemble cast, a number of themes are explored in the show such as the expansion of the American nation-state, Indigenous territorial rights, the growth of industrial technology in the 19th century, race relations and social class.
The lead character of the series, Cullen Bohannon (played by Anson Mount), at the start of Season One had been drawn to the railway project on a revenge mission – he had been first seeking to avenge the murder of his family and hired help by a rogue Union gang during the Civil War. As a way to track down that gang, Bohannon joined the railway’s construction (becoming foreman) but by the end of Season Two he had become linked to the finishing of the line in a way not previously anticipated.
Season Three will feature ten episodes and will be set in the year 1867. A new female character, played by Jennifer Ferrin, will be introduced – journalist Louise Ellison will travel to the “end of track” to report on the building of the Union Pacific for the national newspapers. In that era, the Union Pacific was in a race with the eastward-building Central Pacific to see which railroad could lay the most track (thus receiving more government funds) prior to their eventual connection – that connection would take place on May 10, 1869 in Utah.
