While the Ubisoft release date of Call of Juarez: Gunslinger has yet to provided, some interesting details have emerged about this upcoming and download-only Western video game that will be available for Xbox, Sony PlayStation and PC platforms. The studio of development is Techland.

In this first player shooter, gamers take on the role of bounty hunter Silas Greaves in the 19th century American West. The gameplay actually rolls out as narrative flashback – an older Greaves recounts his past deeds and players live out those events. Greaves tracks some of the Old West’s real historical outlaws – those outlaws include Billy the Kid, Butch Cassidy and Jesse James.

Ubisoft has drawn on the cultural legacy of 19th century dime novels – which embellished or invented stories about Old West figures – to acknowledge the mythic component of Western story-telling. Players will see in the gameplay that there are real differences between what the elder Greaves initially describes and what the player faces during the actual event.

Concurrent to the mythic stream that has always been a part of the Western genre, players can search for collectibles that provide historical accounts of the actual Old West figure. This is commendable and if interest is sparked toward further research on a given individual, then Call of Juarez: Gunslinger is giving players a chance to bounty hunt history.
