Welcome to Westerns Reboot…..a blog that explores the ideas of Westerns both past and emerging. The Western film still offers – even in an increasingly urban world – a chance to reflect upon a host of ideas and issues….on interaction with the natural world, self-determination, relations between those of different backgrounds, the telling of history and the role of art. There is nothing in North America, I believe, that cannot be explored in the Western film genre….the importance of the land, race and gender, technology, immigration, the growth of industry and central government and as a recent Western has shown….even extra-terrestrials. The Western is a (North) American art form specific to this continent and provides a framework for understanding both the history and contemporary culture of North America.
This site will provide regular reflections on Western films and related media – video links and images will be shared as available. This exploration will touch upon various aspects of the Western film genre such as the genre’s origins, its components, landscape and setting, race and gender and the work of specific directors and actors. Please feel free to “follow” this blog and to share it within your own social media circles.
I also work as a freelance writer and teach two separate Western film courses. One is online for Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario – international students are welcome! – and the other is both an online and an in-class course offered by St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario, where I live on the Michigan border. Both courses are offered each academic term – the next session will be the Spring/May 2013 term. I have copied links below for those that are interested. My email is also provided below for those that wish to correspond directly with me.
Finally, this blog welcomes all….no matter your own location or background – your reflections on the Western are valid because you speak from your own specific interpretation of the genre. For more info on my own background and approach to Westerns, feel free to click on the About link at the top of this page.
Thanks for your time in reading this and I hope that you ride this way often!
